Welker Pulls Through with Solid Outing as Roadrunner Men's Golf Repeats as GSAC Champions!

Heading into Wednesday's Garden State Athletic Conference Championship Meet at Flanders Valley GC, Roadrunner Golf Coach Guy Davidson knew he would likely need to rely on his depth to repeat as Men's Golf team champions.

He was right on the mark with his assessment -- and he can thank freshman Paul Welker for stepping up with one of his finest performances of the season to help the Runners emerge as team champions once again!

Welker shot a 40 on the front 9 and added a solid 44 on the back nine for an overall score of 84. RCSJ grabbed the team title with 335 points to edge runner up County College of Morris's 349 score.

"Morris always has an advantage on the Flanders Valley course since that's where they play their home matches," said Davidson. "With our men's team, we always pick each other up, and today it was Paul who gave us a big boost."

Welker, a Washington Township High graduate, had struggled with the Flanders Valley course on the back nine, as well as on the greens earlier this season. But he made some adjustments and enjoyed a solid outing, supporting teammates Logan Perrone and Nick Iuliucci, each of whom turned in 81 scores.

"All I needed were a few minor adjustments to correct these problems, and it made such a difference today," said Welker. "I had no idea how everyone else was shooting, but I'm happy to have contributed."

On the women's side, sophomore Nancy Davidson finished as medalist with a 92 followed by teammates Alaina Villari (101) and Lanie Guzman (139).

Nancy hopes that she has worked herself out of a minor slump over the past 2 weeks.

"I had spent some time with our swings coach Brian Perino, and he helped me make a few adjustments, and ot made a difference today," said Davidson. "I hope to keep working back into a groove during the postseason."

The Runners will next compete in a regional meet at Allentown Municipal Course before competing in the Region 19 championship Meet at Ashbrook Golf Club May 13-14.
