Osman Barrie scored a goal and Zach Piro added an assist, but it wasn't enough as Camden County College defeated the Roadrunners' men's soccer team 6-2 to win the NJCAA Region XIX Championship on Saturday at County College of Morris.
The Roadrunners trailed 2-1 at halftme, but were outscored 4-1 in the second half. Coach George Hobbins' Runners, who started the season with an 0-3 mark, finished with an 11-7-1 overall record as regional runnerup.
Congrats to the the Runners on another standout 2017 campaign.
Championship Game Preview
It's championship time once again! The No. 4-seeded Roadrunners face a tough test coming up against No. 1 seed Camden CC Saturday at County College of Morris at 2 pm as the two clubs clash for the Region XIX Championship.
Last Thursday's 5-1 triumph over Montgomery County College in the region semifinal may have been the finest performance of the season for an RCGC squad loaded with freshmen.
The win improved RCGC's overall record to 11-6-1 following an 0-3 start, and head coach George Hobbins was naturally beaming with pride following the key win.
"If you had told me back in August that we would have an 11-win season, I might not have believed it," said Hobbins, who has collected over 100 career wins as a coach. "This is a tribute to their hard work -- and you could see that today. They were aggressive the entire game, and I'm proud of how far they've come."
RCGC suffered a tough 4-0 loss to Camco back on October 14, and Skidmore and company know they have their hands full with the Cougars. Camden County is ranked No. 6 in a talented field of NJCAA D III teams nationally, and has posted a glittering 15-3-1 overall record against some of the top competition in the U.S.
"No doubt, we will need to play our best to stay competitive," Skidmore said. "They have skilled players everywhere on the field, so this will be a challenge. "But we are excited and ready. We won't back down!"
