Rowan College Derby: Men's Soccer Can't Cash in on Scoring Opportunities in Loss to RCSJ Cumberland

For the second straight game, the scoring opportunities were right out in front -- but for the second straight game there were no goals to show for their efforts.

That proved to be the story of the Roadrunner men's soccer 2-0 loss to sister school RCSJ Cumberland Thursday might in the Rowan College Derby at Rowan University.

The Runners outshot the Dukes by a 12-9 margin, but the goals simply did not register.

The Dukes scored a first-half goal to take a 1-0 halftime lead. Then, midway through the second half, they moved out to a 2-0 advantage thanks to a second score.

Roadrunner midfielders Justin Phy (Triton) and Francesco Fazzolari (Glassboro) registered three shots apiece and had a combined three shots on goal - but it wasn't enough. Defensively, goalkeepers Connor Rink and James Bartolotto faced a combined 11 shots on goal with 9 saves.

The outcome was eerily similar to Tuesday's 1-0 loss at Ocean County College -- but head coach George Hobbins feels his team is ready to snap out of their scoring drought.

"We had some opportunities, but we're not finding the back of the net," said Hobbins, whose team dropped to 5-3-1 overall. "Defensively, we played well -- we're just not scoring goals. But that will change -- we've been aggressive and we'll find our scoring touch again. We just need to continue being aggressive."

Next up for the Runners is an away match at Ulster County Community College on Saturday at 4:00 pm. That will be followed with home games against Buckc CC (Tuesday) and Bergen CC (Thursday).

Derby Announcement

The RCSJ men's and women's soccer teams will take on RCSJ Cumberland during the Inaugural Rowan College Derby for the South Jersey Shield, set for Thursday, September 26, at Rowan University's Athletic Complex.

The matches mark the first time the two schools have competed against each other on the field since the merger of the former Rowan College at Gloucester County and Cumberland County College into Rowan College South Jersey (RCSJ). The teams programs will also share the opportunity of competing at RU's NCAA Division III complex for the first time this season.

"It should be an exciting atmosphere," said RCSJ Gloucester Athletic Director Brian Rowan. "Rowan University played a big role in the merger of our schools and this is great exposure for our soccer programs to compete in their athletic complex."

Dukes Athletic Director Jonathan "JD" Dijamco also feels both schools will benefit from the exposure.

"For the kids to experience this is tremendous," Dijamico said. "Our teams are familiar with each other, plus we're playing on a local NCAA field. It's pretty cool for the athletes and coaches."

Teams will be presented the South Jersey Shield plaque at the conclusion of each contest.

The Roadrunner women's team opens play against the Dukes starting at 4:00 pm.

The Roadrunner men's team plays Cumberland in a 6:00 pm kickoff.

The Roadrunner men's team is off to a fast start and sits at No. 9 in the NJCAA Division III National Rankings.

"It's nice to play Cumberland at Rowan," said Roadrunner men's coach George Hobbins. "We've talked back and forth about playing at the university's complex the past couple of seasons, and it should be fun to play our sister school in this environment."

The Roadrunner women's squad, coached by Megan Ruttler, will also be ready for the challenge on a D-III NJAC field.

"Its super exciting and I'm sure the players will be pumped," said  Ruttler. "I played on Rowan's field when I was an athlete at Stockton, and it's quite an experience."
