The RCSJ Roadrunners cross country teams headed to Media, PA on October 1 to challenge themselves against some hills. They were also faced with the lingering rain and winds from hurricane Ian as well as some missing runners due to illness. The Roadrunner squads raced well in the conditions and on the twisting, turning, hilly course.
The top Lady Roadrunner was Mackenzie Cochran who steadily improved her place throughout the race to finish an impressive 27th. Following on her heels was Alyssa Connor who set a new personal record by 20 seconds despite the difficulty of the course. The rest of the lady Roadrunners were out of action this week to rest up from some illness.
The men's race had a photo finish, with CJ Gilmore out-leaning Charlie Helper to place 29th and 30th. Joey Malec raced well and then served as the team's loudest supporter. Derek Wyllie and John Schilling placed 44th and 47th respectively, with Ben Kellum finishing up for the Roadrunners in 61st with his fastest time of the season. The men's team ended up finishing 5th in the team competition and earned top JUCO in the meet.
Coach Ryan Hughes was once again happy with the team's efforts this week, stating, "It was great to see some personal best times as well as times that were comparable to last week despite the conditions and course being much tougher. That means the teams are progressing nicely and are adjusting well to the tougher longer race distances. We hope to be back to full strength next week as we pass the midway mark of the season."
Next up for the Roadrunners is the DeSales Invitational hosted by DeSales University on Saturday 10/8 where the teams will face what is probably their toughest overall course of the season.
