Softball Bats Come Alive in Wins Over Rainy River CC During Florida Spring Break Road Trip

RCGC softball coach Steve DePasquale knew his team's schedule would be tough entering Tuesday's three-game stint again Iowa-Central CC and Rainy River CC. And his Roadrunners more than held their own against the Division 1 and 2 competition during the team's Florida spring break road trip.

In Game 1, the Runners were overwhelmed by D-1 Iowa Central 15-3, at Chain of Lakes Park with several scoring opportunities left on the field. But the team bounced back with a resounding doubleheader sweep of Rainy River CC by scores of 18-0 and 17-6.

The sweep gave RCGC (6-6) six wins in its last 9 games, with the team's lineup beginning to make plenty of noise at the plate.

"We left some runs out there against Iowa Central, so I wasn't too concerned," said DePasquale. "Iowa Central played us really tough. But the bats came alive in the next two games, and it was good to see us bounce back."

Against Rainy River in Game 1, sophomore Jackie Lesher drove in three runs while teammate Miranda Booras added two RBIs to lead the offensive assault. Winning pitcher Gia Cerminaro allowed just two hits in 5 innings of work.

In Game 2, Mackenzie Ponto and Christina Wilgus each slammed two-run homers to lead the attack.

"We've hit more home runs in the first part of this season than we did all of last season," said DePasquale. "So it's both encouraging and exciting to see what we're capable of on offense."

The Runners hit the field again Wednesday with games against Iowa Central and Rainy River at 10:30 am and 12:30 pm respectively.
