Roadrunners Answer Challenge -- Complete Perfect Weekend with Sweep of Suffolk County (NY)

This past weekend proved to be one where RCGC's softball team answered the call in a big way -- and against two quality opponents who played in last season's NJCAA National Championship Tournament.

Following Saturday's sweep against NJCAA D III third ranked Lehigh-Carbon, the Runners were at it again Sunday, sweeping powerful Suffolk County (NY) to finish the weekend with a 4-0 record.

Now the owner of a 23-9 overall record and the No. 6 spot in the D-III National Rankings, will the Roadrunners move up this week when the new rankings are released?

"We can only control what we do on the field -- rankings are just numbers so we don't worry about it," said head coach Steve DePasquale.

And on the field, RCGC looked solid in running its win streak to 13 games Sunday with the sweep of Suffolk.

On Sunday, the Runners won the opener 10-1 in five innings, highlighted by a seven-run outburst in the third inning. Leftfielder Olivia Farina cracked a two-run home run while teammate Mackenzie Ponto added two RBIs to spark the offense. Winning pitcher Jaclyn Lesher scattered six hits and struck out four in five innings.

In Game 2, RCGC came out victorious by a 9-5 score in seven innings. Winning pitcher Mackenzie Ponto allowed six hits in five innings while stroking two doubles and knocking in three runs at the plate.

The Runners raced out to a 6-0 lead before the visitors moved to within 6-3 in the fourth inning. The home team closed out the scoring with three late runs.

"What I enjoy seeing is that everyone in the lineup has contributed," said DePasquale. "We might get behind early, but we're confident someone will come through, whether it's with hitting, defense or pitching."

The Runners will face Region XIX opponent Bucks County on Tuesday with a twinbill starting at 3:30 p.m.
