GAME DAY: Canty, Roadrunners Roll Past Sussex County in Home Opener

GAME DAY: Canty, Roadrunners Roll Past Sussex County in Home Opener

Yes, she does it all. We're talking about freshman guard Qeiajae Canty (Atlantic City), who continued her amazing 2019-20 season on Saturday with a solid outing in helping the Roadrunners' women's basketball team to an easy 78-44 triumph over GSAC and Region XIX foe Sussex County in the team's home opener.

Canty dominated the stat column with 17 points, 11 rebounds and 6 steals. She is averaging a superb 15.3 points per game in three early games to help the Runners off to a  fast 2-1 start overall.

"She's everywhere on the court -- just an amazing player," said head coach Rich Cooper. "You can see how she impacts a game's outcome."

The Runners raced out to a 21-15 first quarter lead and then claimed a commanding 48-25 halftime advantage. Cooper's team continued the onslaught in the second half by outscoring the Skylanders 30-19 in the second half.

And Canty was in the middle of it all.

"I love being a part of this team," the former Atlantic City star said afterwards. "We enjoy being teammates and we really click on the court."

Providing offensive and defensive support for Canty were freshman forward Molly Hoffman (Ocean City), who collected 16 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore guard Kadina Harris-Hood (Atlantic City), who added 11 points. Freshman guard Syria Bass (Holy Spirit) also chipped in with 9 points, her season average over three games.

Next up for the Runners will be road games at Atlantic Cape on Nov. 12 and Passaic County on Nov. 14.

Game Day Information

Following a successful road trip last weekend to start the 2019-20 season, the RCSJ Gloucester women's basketball team will play their home opener Saturday, Nov. 9 against Sussex County Community College in a 12 noon start.

The Roadrunners currently hold a 1-1 overall record, with an opening day win over Bryant & Stratton (NY) followed by a loss to nationally ranked Onondaga (NY) during the Onondaga CC Tournament on Nov. 2-3.

Offensively, several players contributed consistently, including freshman Qeiajae Canty (Atlantic City), who has averaged 14.5 points per game; sophomore Kylar Coughlin (Gloucester City) (Triton), who has averaged 12 points per game; and sophomore Kadinah Harris-Hood (Atlantic City), who has contributed 12.0 points per game. Sophomores Nikita Acker (Triton) and Mya Lewis (Cherry Hill West) along with freshman Molly Hoffman (Ocean City) have also performed well in the early going.

"Offensively, we seem to have a handle on things, and we have a few weapons," said Coach Rich Cooper. "We just need to come together defensively, and that will happen over the next few games."

The home opener will be followed by a busy schedule this week, with road games vs. Atlantic Cape Tuesday night and Passaic County Community College on Thursday evening.
