The Roadrunner women's basketball team dropped a key 74-72 decision to visiting Ocean County College as the two programs position themselves for the upcoming NJCAA Region XIX playoffs.
Coach Rich Cooper's team (17-7 overall, 12-4 conference) fell behind 7-0 at the outset and then 48-35 at halftime. The Runners staged a comeback in the second half by outscoring the Vikings 16-11 in the third quarter and 21-15 in the final period, but the rally fell just short.
Next up for the Runners will be a makeup contest vs. Passaic County Community College at home February 13 in a 5 pm start.
Game Day Preview
The Roadrunner's women's basketball team faces a critical test when they square off vs. Garden State Athletic Conference rival Ocean County College in a 7:30 pm home match Saturday, February 8.
The Runners enter Saturday's contest with a 17-6 overall record and 11-2 GSAC mark. They will face a Vikings team that enters the matchup with a 15-3 overall record and 12-2 within the GSAC.
More importantly, both clubs are just one game behind Passaic CC in the conference standings. RCSJ-Gloucester survived the first meeting between the two at Ocean County CC in November with an hard-fought 88-82 overtime victory.
Runners' head coach Rich Cooper expects nothing less this time around.
"It will be a battle, no doubt -- just like the first game," said Cooper. "Ocean County is well-coached and they have talented players, so we can't afford any letdowns."
