NJCAA National Championship Wrestling Tournament Home Page: Fischer, Baer, and Pencook Each Win Twice

The Roadrunner's 2019 season ended with losses by Dylan Fischer at 165 pounds and Tyler Baer at 174 late Friday. Both turned in 2-2 records in their weight classes and just finished shy of gaining All-American honors.

Anthony Pencook (141 pounds) also finished the tournament with a solid 2-2 record while Dylan Skidmore (157) and Jared Carr also won opening round bouts.

Check out all of the results starting with the Round of 32 below.

First Round (Round of 32) Action

Five Roadrunner wrestlers won first-round matches during the first day of competition at Friday's NJCAA National Championship Wrestling Tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa, highlighted by dramatic victories by sophomore Dylan Skidmore at 157 pounds and freshman Tyler Baer at 174.

With seconds remaining in his bout against Nassau's Adolfo Batista, Baer scored a clutch takedown to pull ahead for good and claim a heart-thumping 11-9 win.

Skidmore used a late headlock to rally for a 9-7 triumph over Niagara's Anthony Bell. Skidmore, who went 2-2 in last season's national tournament, trailed his opponent by a 7-3 count before staging his comeback.

Eastern District II Champion Dylan Fischer won by pin in 1:07 over Triton College's Nicholas White to advance out of the Round of 32.

Sophomore Anthony Pencook began the day's action with a close win, a 6-3 decision over Cowley's Blake Hickerson. Pencook used a third period takedown to pull ahead for good in the closing minute.

Freshman Jared Carr, meanwhile, was also victorious in his opening-round bout by a 13-1 major decision over Mercyhurst's Aaron Morris.

Freshman heavyweight John Fountain was not as fortunate as his teammates, however, suffering a pin in 1:44 to Umpqua's Adam Lamb.

Second-round bouts are currently underway at Mid-America Center, the host site, as RCGC hopes to continue its success into late Friday afternoon.

Friday Second-Round Action

In Friday second-round competition, Fischer advanced to the quarterfinals with a 26-9 tech fall over Elsworth's Khanden Howse.

Pencook lost by fall in 1:41 to Ancilla's Austin Laughlin while at 149 pounds, Jared Carr lost by fall in 1:19 to Clackamas' Martin Margolis.

Dylan Skidmore also lost in the second round by an 18-6 major decision as did Tyler Baer, who lost a 7-1 decision in the second round.

Heavyweight John Fountain, meanwhile, lost his first two bouts and was eliminated on the first day of competition. He lost by pin in 1:44 in his first bout and by fall to Jamestown's Nick Jones in Round 2.

Friday Third-Round and Late Action

Fischer dropped a heartbreaking 11-6 quarterfinal bout to Clackamas' Mason McDaniel, who picked up four near-fall points early in the match. The former West Deptford High standout then dropped a 14-5 major decision in the wrestleback round to Northeast Oklahoma's Kyle Caldwell, falling short of earning an All-American bid.

Tyler Baer, a freshman standout from Pitman, won his third-round wrestleback by a 5-3 decision over Jamestown's Dan Torres in overtime. The Roadrunners threw a challenge brick late in the bout overturning a takedown to force overtime.

Anthony Pencook claimed a 13-5 decision at 141 pounds in a wrestleback against Jamestown's Ben Winkler to advance to the next round of wrestlebacks. In his final match of the tournament, Pencook fell to Joshua Francich from Highline College.

Jared Carr lost his wrestleback at 149 pounds and was eliminated while Dylan Skidmore also lost a wrestleback bout in Round 3 to drop out of the tournament.

Tournament Preview

The Roadrunner wrestling team will be competing in this weekend's NJCAA National Wrestling Championship Tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa as six RCGC wrestlers compete for National titles in their individual weight classes.

The six Roadrunner grapplers who emerged out of the recent Eastern District tournament to qualify for Nationals include:

Anthony Pencook (141 pounds)
Jared Carr (149)
Dylan Skidmore (157)
Dylan Fischer (165)
Tyler Baer (174)
John Fountain (Heavyweight)

Of that group, only sophomore standout Dylan Skidmore, a former Glassboro High star, has competed in the national tournament. Skidmore, who qualified this season via a third place finish in the districts, posted a 2-2 record at nationals last season to narrowly miss qualifying for the final four.

"I'll take this one match at a time and will look to make a deep run," said Skidmore, who also competed for current RCGC coach Dan Antonelli in high school. "Everyone in this tournament will be a tough draw and every match will be competitive."

Fischer, who along with teammate Jared Carr won a disrict crown, feels confident entering the national tournament.

"I know I can wrestle with anyone, so it's all on my shoulders," he said. "I just need to stay cool, calm and collected against each of my opponents and give it my best. I'm confident I will do well."

Carr, meanwhile, had not wrestled on a varsity team at Millville High due to previous injuries, but enjoyed a banner collegiate campaign to qualify for nationals.

"I'm excited and proud for what I have achived," he said. "But it will be all business once we start wrestling this weekend."

Wrestling begins Friday morning at 8:30 am. See schedule below.
