First-year Roadrunner women's tennis coach Kristi Twardziak is excited that her team will be able to begin the Fall 2020 campaign on time.
That news came from the NJCAA on July 13, when it released plans for athletics nationwide following the recent COVID 19 outbreak. Following the recommendations from the NJCAA Presidential Advisory Council and the NJCAA Board of Regents, the NJCAA announced its adjusted plan of action for the upcoming 2020-21 academic year. Following the Board of Regents' vote on July 13, a majority of competition will be moved to the spring semester.
Two sports, however -- women's tennis and cross country -- will maintain their normal fall schedules. And that news has Twardziak ready for action.
"I'm really happy we'll be able to play in the Fall," said Twardziak. "The guidelines have been set up where all of our matches and practices will be played in a safe environment -- and that's the main priority here."
Practice is set to start August 1, 2020 with competition slated to begin on August 20. The Region XIX championship tournament is set for late October 2020 while the the NJCAA Division III Women's Tennis Nationals are scheduled for October 30-November 1 at Peachtree City Tennis Center in Peachtree City, GA.
A new coach to collegiate athletics, Twardziak put in overtime this past spring at the start of the pandemic in her recruiting efforts -- and she feels there will be a big pay off this Fall.
"It was tough because we couldn't bring the kids in to speak with them or show them the facilities," she noted. "But it has worked out fine as we have a full roster of very committed athletes. We are excited that all of our hard work will pay off."
