NJCAA Division III Women's Tennis National Championships: Ivey, Everson Lead Roadrunners on Opening Day

As first-round competition goes, Friday was a grand opening day for the Roadrunner Women's National Championship Tournament at the PeachTree Tennis Center in PeachTree City, GA.

The Runners represented Region 19 teams well, winning four singles matches along with the No. 2 doubles match.

Sydney Ivey, a No, 2 seed, advanced at No. 3 singles with a triumph over College of DuPage's Alexandra Russell while she teamed with Alexandra Everson for a win at No. 2 doubles.

Everson also emerged a winner at No. 5 singles when she slipped by Hudson Valley's Sydney Philips.

"I didn't know what to expect," said Ivey on her opening round performances. "You just have to go out and play your game and hope for the best."

In other action, No. 1 singles Amanda Volk advanced with a win over Hudson Valley CC's Aubrey Murphy while No. 4 singles Jahaira Flores disposed of Hudson Valley;s Emma Spadaro.

"I fell behind and just tried to keep my composure," noted Volk in summing up her win. "It was hard, but I know this only get tougher here, and I was glad to hang on."

In other action, No. 2 singles Irene Tantaros dropped a tough match to Oxford's Emily Freestone.

 

Tournament Preview

The RCSJ-Gloucester Women's Tennis Team will look to perform well among the nation's best in this weekend's NJCAA Division III National Championships Nov. 4 through 6 in PeachTree City, GA.

The Roadrunners performed well in the recent NJCAA Region 19 Championships. Freshman Sydney Ivey earned a Region 19 title at third singles, and she hopes to continue her success at Nationals.

Also, sophomore Alexandra Everson was a Region runnerup at fifth singles while Jahaira Flores finished runnerup at fourth singles.

This marks the second time the Roadrunners will travel to nationals under Coach Twardziak.

"Everyone is excited about competing in the National Tournament, and we hope to hold our own," said Coach Kristi Twardziak.
