Veteran South Jersey Coach Mary Jewett to Lead Roadrunner Women's Tennis Program

Veteran South Jersey Coach Mary Jewett to Lead Roadrunner Women's Tennis Program

Roadrunner Athletics is proud to announce that Mary Jewett will be our next head women's tennis coach. Coach Jewett will continue in her role as the highly successful head coach at Cherry Hill East HS in the fall while coaching the Roadrunner women's team in the spring. Coach Jewett is as well known and successful as they come at the high school level and is excited to recruit a talented group to compete at the intercollegiate level in her first college head coaching position.

"I really look forward to coaching at the collegiate level," she commented. "I was introduced to the returning players who show real leadership! We met with some recruits that are enthusiastic to jump into our program. I am hoping we get so many more. These young women will certainly sell our program! As we improve and establish ourselves, our momentum will surely grow.."

In addition to her high school coaching career, Coach Jewett is also a certified tennis professional and instructs tennis as the head pro at Medford Village CC.

"We are extremely excited to have Mary Jewett join our coaching staff here at Rowan College," AD Brian Rowan. "She is as qualified as can be, did a great job in the interview process, and has already met with the returning players and started to build a rapport. She is knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and has great contacts with the high school coaches in southern NJ and across the state. We expect success with the program both on and off the court."

Coach Jewett learned the game from her parents, Ferdinand and Lorraine, growing up in Williamsville, New York, eventually going on to play four years at Division I St. Bonaventure.

"I learned quite a bit playing mixed doubles tennis with my parents growing up," she recalled fondly. "At St. Bonaventure, we all came in on the ground floor -- and not one of the players on our team won a set the whole first year -- and we were undefeated by our fourth year! "

Coach Jewett looks forward to building the program at RCSJ-Gloucester and plans to start recruiting right away.

"Obviously we need to recruit …. so I'll need to reach out to other coaches, do some round robin tennis, and maybe bring them out here and do some tournaments in August," Mary said.  "If we can get some early success, then the teammates will sell the program. And once you get some success then the program grows."

Mary Jewett has been the head girls tennis coach at Cherry Hill East HS since 1998. The Cougars have been one of the most dominant programs in South Jersey during her tenure, earning four Group 4 state championships, finishing as state runner up three times, winning the NJ Tournament of Champions in 2003, and finishing as TOC runner up in 2002. Her teams also won numerous sectional and conference crowns and are consistently ranked among the best in the area.

Coach Jewett lives in Cherry Hill with her husband Adie. They have three grown children who are avid tennis players and six multi-sport grandchildren.
