The cross country/track and field programs at RCSJ have a long history of success, but we also strive to help every single athlete improve and maximize their potential both athletically and academically.  Whether you are setting national records or just personal records, every member of the team is a vital part of our Roadrunner family.  Athletes from RCSJ have gone on to compete at almost every local college/university, several have gone on to compete after earning scholarships to NCAA DII and DI colleges, and several have moved on to compete at schools across the country.  We are also proud to have alumni who have gone semi-professional and are competing at USATF National Championships/Olympic Trials.

Aside from athletic success, we have had a long tradition of academic success.  Numerous athletes have earned Academic All-American honors, the teams have been named NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year, several athletes have been named National Student-Athletes of the Year, and several former student athletes have gone on to earn advanced degrees, PhD's and MD's.

Hughes began his coaching career at the high school level in Missouri where he helped his team earn a state title in 2001 as well as 5 other top 5 finishes in state championship competitions.

He ran scholastically at Edgewood High School (now Winslow Township) where he was a Group 4 state qualifier.  After HS, he continued to run at Rowan University where he was a numerous time All-Mideast Region performer, numerous time All-NJAC performer, individual NJAC Champion in the 1500m, and Academic All-American. He graduated from Rowan University in 1999 with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology. He was honored at Rowan in 1999 as the athlete-of-the-year.  In 2009, he earned his Master's Degree in Biology from Washington University in St. Louis. He continues to run competitively and currently teaches at Triton High School.

A southern New Jersey native, Hughes resides in Glassboro, NJ with his wife Kelly, and sons Christian, Henry, and Benjamin Fritz.  In Glassboro, he is currently vice president of the Glassboro Board of Education.
