Today we highlight sophomore right fielder RJ Mustaro, who played a key role in helping the Roadrunners win their second straight NJCAA Division III National Championship in Spring 2024 and who is enjoying an impressive 2025 campaign.
Year: Sophomore
Height/Wt.: 6 feet, 1 inch; 200 pounds
Hometown: Westville, NJ
High School: Gloucester Catholic, Class of 2023
Major: Liberal Arts. Will work on his bachelor's degree when he enrolls at Monmouth University next Fall.
Favorite Activities: RJ is family oriented and comes from a family with successes in GCHS and Brooklawn athletics. He is a big country music fan, especially of Zach Bryan, and enjoys spending time with his teammates. "You spend a lot of time with your teammates, and they become your best friends over several months -- this has been a great experience," RJ said.
About RJ Mustaro: RJ is picking up this spring right where he left off last season. After 18 games, Mustaro is hitting a sizzling .619 with 7 home runs and 29 RBIs. The Runners are off to a perfect 18-0 record heading into the mid-point of the season.
In his freshman season, RJ went on a tear at the conclusion of the campaign in smashing key home runs during the postseason that helped the Runners win both the Region 19 and national crowns. He closed out the season with 8 home runs, a .341 BA, and 51 RBIs while playing amazing defense in right field.
RJ has committed to Monmouth University for the 2026 season.
He played his high school ball at Gloucester Catholic under Coach Dennis Barth, who provided him a solid foundation both at GCHS and with the Brooklawn American Legion program. "Coach Barth was my first coach, and he taught me the game and everything I learned before coming here to RCSJ," said RJ. "I'm grateful for the time I had with him."
At GCHS, RJ turned in a career .356 batting average with 6 home runs and 61 RBIs, as well as numerous clutch hits in leading the Rams to the South Jersey Non-Public B championship in his senior year. In basketball he scored 1,109 career points, while also excelling in football.
RJ Mustaro on playing for RCSJ Gloucester and Coach Rob Valli: "It was great coming from one winning program to another -- it made the transition smoother," he commented. "It was a great decision to stay local -- it's worked out well. And it turns out that with help from the coaches, I was able to save my best games for the end of the year -- and it was awesome to bring home the big trophy from Nationals."
Coach Rob Valli on RJ Mustaro: "RJ is off to a great start in the new season, plus he had a great fall," said Valli. "The opportunity to play as much as he did in his freshman season is an advantage. He worked to develop his strength and it changed his game from spring to fall -- an opportunity he did not have when he was a multi-sport athlete -- and a good one -- at Gloucester Catholic. This is the first time he is competing as a full-time baseball player, and with his work ethic, you can see his game improving every day."
