Following a solid first half of play, the RCGC men's soccer team could not keep up the pace the remainder of the way as visiting Bucks County College collected a 3-2 victory Thursday in a NJCAA Region XIX playoff game.
Prospects looked bright heading into the second half as the Runners held a 1-0 lead thanks to a first half goal by Runners' midfielder Justin Phy. RCGC clearly had momentum on its side after nearly cashing in on another scoring opportunity early in the game.
But the Centurions quickly tied it at 1-1 on a goal early in the second half by Salvatore Ficarotta, before Ficarotta and Adjewoda Sanoumega tacked on two more goals to give the visitors a surprising 3-1 lead with 9:06 remaining.
The Runners' Andrew Sooy cut the margin to 3-2 with a late score on an unassisted goal. Coach George Hobbins' RCGC team finished their 2018 campaign with a 6-6-4 overall record.
Playoff Preview
The RCGC men's soccer team has qualified for the NJCAA Region XIX Division III playoffs as the No. 4 seed as the tournament pairings were released.
The Runners will host Bucks County Community College in a quarterfinal round on Wednesday, October 24 at 2:30 pm in a featured @njcaatv broadcast.
The two opponents are familiar rivals in the playoffs with the Roadrunners winning an epic two-overtime playoff meeting in 2016, RCGC also topped Bucks in an early season matchup this Fall, but that result means nothing entering the playoffs, said Coach George Hobbins.
"We all know each other, and trust me -- this will be a battle to the finish," said Hobbins. "But we feel we are ready both offensively and defensively, and the players are excited to qualify for the tournament."
