Game Day at RCGC -- Roadrunners and Middlesex County Finish in Tie

Game Day at RCGC -- Roadrunners and Middlesex County Finish in Tie
Everything looked upbeat when first-year midfielder Justin Phy scored on a penalty kick with under 8 minutes to play in regulation Saturday.

That goal gave the Roadrunners' men's soccer team a one-score lead in a hard fought battle against visiting Middlesex in a Garden State Athletic Conference contest.

But then the Blue Colts tied up the contest on a goal by Michael Malgioglio moments later to send the game into overtime. And the teams ended tied at 2-2 following two more hard-fought overtime periods.

The tie gave RCGC a 5-5-2 record while Middlesex sports a 4-5-1 mark.

"We played extremely hard, but some scoring chances were left out on the field -- and that was the difference," said Coach George Hobbins. "Hopefully we'll able to pick up the pace."

Forward Ryan Flaherty struck first for the Runners as the two teams entered halftime tied at 1-1.

RCGC has two key GSAC and Region XIX games in the coming week. They host Sussex County on Oct. 4 in a 4 pm start before traveling to Bergen County on Saturday, Oct. 6 in a 2 pm start.
