RCGC Men's Tennis Opens Season in Fine Form By Blanking Illinois Valey CC at Riverwinds

The long-awaited opening to the 2018 men's tennis season proved to be well worth the wait for Coach Brian Rowan's Roadrunners.?

After enduring several cancellations and postonements due to inclement weather this month, RCGC showed they will likely be a a solid regional and national contender once again this sping. Following last season's third place finish in the NJCAA Divsion III National Championships at Collin College in Plano, Texas, the Roadunners opened 2018 in fine fashion by blanking visiting Illinois Valley Community College 9-0, at Riverwinds Tennis Club.

No. 1 singles Sebastian Gonzalez (Cherry Hill East), who finished as national runnerup and All American in 2017, was solid in this opening match. At No. 1 singles, he blanked IVCC's Aaron Pelican 6-0, 6-1. At No. 1 doubles he teamed with Mike Colville (West Deptford) to down Pelican and Mason Clark by an 8-2 score.

Colville, meanwhile, who won the national title at No. 6 singles in 2017, also looked sharp when he rolled past IVCC's Joe Lashonse 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.

But Rowan's Runners did not need to rely solely on their returning national placewinners to flex their muscles. Sophomore Jacob Harrison (Glassboro) grabbed a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Clark at No. 3 singles; Paolo Claure (Delran) won at No. 4 singles; Zach Carr, a Gloucester County champion as a Williamstown senior, was a victor at No. 5 singles; and John Ciliberto (Paul VI) was a winner at No. 6 singles.

The Runners also prevailed at No. 2 doubles and No. 3 doubles. Claure and Harrison claimed a win at No. 2 doubles while Clark and Ciliberto added a triumph at No. 3 doubles.
