Roadrunner Athletics Impacted by NJCAA’s Updated Return to Play Action Plan

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on Roadrunner Athletics and will continue to impact us throughout the 2020-21 academic year. On July 13th, the NJCAA released an updated action plan which made significant changes to the sport calendar for the year. The biggest impact of the change is moving fall close-contact sports to the spring semester and pushing back the start of winter sports until January.

"The changes from the NJCAA will make a significant impact on our planning and for all of our student-athletes," commented Roadrunner AD Brian Rowan. "We support this plan as it gives all of our student-athletes a chance to compete but we understand it will be challenging. In the past, we have always adapted to change well and will plan to be flexible during the 2020-21 year. We also understand that more changes could be necessary as we continue to navigate through a pandemic."

Roadrunner Women's Volleyball is coming off a season in which they won their first Garden State Athletics Conference title and have a very talented group of returners and incoming players. The team will not get the chance to compete on court until January 29th with practices scheduled to begin no earlier than January 11th. The National Championships have been moved to mid-April.

Roadrunner Men's and Women's Soccer will see their first competition of the year on April 2, 2021 with practices allowed to begin March 15th. National Championships have been moved to early-June.

Winter sports will see their seasons begin in January rather than October this year. Practices will being on January 4th for wrestling and January 11th for basketball. Wrestling competition will be scheduled to being on January 20th with the National Championships moved to April 23-24, 2021. Basketball competition will be scheduled to begin January 22nd with National Championship scheduled to begin on April 19, 2021.

Roadrunner Cross Country and Women's Tennis will still be scheduled to compete this Fall. Practices for these sports will start no earlier than August 15th and details on COVID-19 measures that will be in place will be coming shortly. Student-athletes, coaches, and staff will be required to complete education and screening prior to participation.

The NJCAA is allowing student-athletes and teams to train and potentially scrimmage in the Fall semester with limitations. Roadrunner Athletics is working with NJCAA Region XIX on creating a calendar for this as well as best practices for practices, training, and competition if allowed.

Athletic Director Rowan commented, "We hope to able to have all of our student-athletes involved in some sort of training this Fall and have return to play protocols ready. We will follow all CDC, state, NJAA and institutional guidelines. Coaches have continually been updated and we will continue to update as we get closer to the beginning of the semester."

The Rowan College South Jersey-Gloucester campus is scheduled to re-open for staff on July 20th. We understand if you have additional questions and we encourage you to please contact us here Athletics@RCSJ.edu.
