Roadrunner Men's Basketball Posts First Win for Coach Brandon Williams

You can put win No. 1 in the books for Roadrunner Men's Basketball Coach Brandon Williams. It took a goliath effort Saturday, but the Runners overcame a late 10-point deficit to rally for a 59-56 triumph over visiting Luzerne County (PA), a memorable clash that proved to be the first victory in Williams' collegiate career.

And it all started with defense and resiliency.

The Runners fell behind by 46-36 late in the see-saw battle before staging a furious comeback over the final 5 minutes for the win. Freshman guard Shamar Gantt recorded a steal and breakaway layup with 22.3 seconds remaining for a 57-54 lead to seal the outcome.

"It cane down to great defense down the stretch -- and of course just a refusal to give up," said Williams, whose team, improved to 1-4 this season. "No one panicked when we were 10 points down. We just focused on each play in front of us and kept up the defensive pressure."

Gantt proved to be in the right place at the right time. Running down court on defense, he turned around and stole a pass before breaking down court for a layup and a foul. While he missed the foul shot, Gant's points proved to be the game-winning bucket.

"The defense collapsed in the right spot coming down the court, and I happened to be in the right place," said Gantt. "Once I stole the ball, I wanted to make sure I converted the layup."

RCSJ freshman guard Anthony Colon led all scorers with a game-high 20 points.

Next up for the Runners will be a home game vs. Lehigh Carbon on Tuesday, Nov. 21.
