Men's and Women's Golf: 2023 Season Preview

Men's and Women's Golf: 2023 Season Preview

The RCSJ Men's and Women's Golf teams look forward to a successful Spring 2023 season when the new season formally opens on March 20th.

The Runner's men's team performed well in 2022 under head coach Dr. Guy Davidson and has a solid group of veteran players returning from last season's squad that contended for the GSAC championship and saw two players qualify for the NJCAA National Championships.

The Women's team will field an expanded roster in 2023 that will look to be competitive in GSAC and NJCAA competition.

See a wrap from last season and a preview of the 2023 campaign.

2022 Recap

The 2022 Roadrunners Men's Golf Team had a very successful year in its return to NJCAA competition after spending 2021 as a club team.  Led by Captain Freddie Ramos and outstanding play by Tyler Geatens, the Roadrunners finished 2nd to Community College of Morris County in both the GSAC Tournament and the Region XIX Tournament.  Ramos captured all-region 1st team honors while Geatens earned 2nd team recognition.  Ramos' efforts were enough to earn him a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament along with teammate Cole Bruner, who competed as an alternate.  Ramos and Bruner were the first Roadrunners to represent the college at the National Tournament since Gloucester County College golf legend Bernie Dunn did so in 1979.

Team members were Freddie Ramos, Tyler Geatens, Cole Bruner, Jack Wheaton, Skylar Amoroso and Shane Maccarone.  Skylar Amoroso was the top female community college golfer in the Region last year, but without any competition elected to play on the men's team.  Competing against the men from Region XIX, Amoroso posted scores that counted toward the Roadrunner's men's team total on 2 occasions last year and was a fixture in the team's starting lineup.

2023 Preview

Captain Freddie Ramos returns for his final year as he looks to lead what appears to be an incredibly balanced squad into competition for the Region XIX and GSAC team titles.  Ramos will be joined by Cole Bruner, the teammate who accompanied him to the NJCAA National Tournament last year, 2nd year player Jack Wheaton, and newcomers Sam Burek, Logan Perrone, and Jack HarversonShane Maccarone, a steady returning player, will look to again crack the starting five. Both Burek and Perrone have played a lot of golf and will immediately challenge for starting spots in the lineup.

"While it was great to return to varsity competition last year and to establish ourselves as a legitimate program with the ability to contend, I'm anticipating an even better season for this year's team.  Freddie Ramos is one of the best golfers in the Region and a terrific captain.  We've named Cole Bruner a captain this year due to his commitment to the game."

Added Davidson, "We expect breakout years from Jack Wheaton and Cole Bruner and are anticipating solid play from our newcomers. The key to success in college golf is to have 5 solid golfers who perform CONSISTENTLY.  We have 5 golfers who are all capable of shooting great scores."

Most notably, Roadrunner Golf will be fielding a Women's Team in 2023.  Led by Captain Skylar Amoroso, the Roadrunners Women's Team will feature Nancy Davidson as the team's only other experienced golfer.  The team will be rounded out by outstanding athletes from some of our other RCSJ teams who are looking to add golf to their athletic resume.  Alaina Villari and Crystal Johnson join the team after competing for the RCSJ Women's Soccer Squad, and RCSJ Women's Tennis player Amanda Volk will also compete for the Roadrunners.

Coach Davidson looks forward to a big year from returnee Skylar Amoroso and is proud to coach his daughter Nancy Davidson, an experienced player from Pitman High School.

The women will play a combination of women's- only events and the scheduled men's events that don't conflict. Since no other teams in Region XIX can field a full women's squad, the Roadrunners will compete against individual golfers from other teams and look to prepare for a potential trip to the National Tournament.

Dr. Davidson enters his 3rd year as head coach. Former Assistant Coach Linda Maher has moved out of the area -- taking her place will be Coach Lauren Vilimas, a former standout Roadrunner softball player.

"We're very sorry to see Coach Linda Maher move out of the area…she was a great assistant for the last 2 years," commented Coach Davidson.  "We are very excited to have Coach Lauren Vilimas join our staff after an outstanding career as an all-star softball player at RCSJ. She will help show our women how to be dedicated college athletes."

Also, Jim Clarke, who rekindled the program in 2018, will return this spring as an assistant coach.

The Roadrunners open competition on March 20,  with a split roster playing in two separate tournaments at the LBI National Golf Course as well as Lebanon Valley Country Club.
