The RCSJ Roadrunners cross country teams headed to their largest invitational of the season on October 8th at DeSales University. The teams faced over 200 runners per race and 28 teams. The course was also the most challenging course the Roadrunners have faced this season, with our toughest hills yet. Both teams fared well and came home as the top JUCO teams in the competition.
The Lady Roadrunner squad was still recovering from some illness/injury from the week prior. The ladies worked in two packs, with the lead group consisting of freshman Autumn Heaton and Mackenzie Cochran who finished in 110th and 113th respectively. The second group was led by the steadily improving Alyssa Connor, who set a new personal record by over a minute despite the difficulty of the course. Rounding out the scoring for the lady Roadrunners were Ashton Wiseley and Susana Serrano placing 146th and 151st respectively. The women's team placed 16th overall.
The men's race was led again by CJ Gilmore, setting a new personal best in 29:32 to place 118th. Charlie Helper crossed the line next in 141st. Derek Wyllie and Mike Abate worked together to finish within seconds of each other in 31:01 and 31:14. John Schilling and Ben Kellum finished up for the Roadrunners in 206th and 214th to help the men's team finish 18th in the team competition.
Coach Ryan Hughes was once again happy with the team's efforts this week, stating, "We raced very well on a tough course. It is very exciting to see so many season bests coming out of a very challenging course."
Next up for the Roadrunners is the Delaware Invitational hosted by The University of Delaware on Saturday 10/15 where the teams will preview the course for the Region 19 Championships.
