Shappell, Lee Spark Roadrunners to Three Wins vs. Region 19 Rivals Brookdale and Middlesex

Shappell, Lee Spark Roadrunners to Three Wins vs. Region 19 Rivals Brookdale and Middlesex

A quick flip flop this weekend proved to be a difference make for the No. 6 nationally ranked softball team as they captured 3 of 4 games vs. tough Region 19 rivals Brookdale and Middlesex.

Veteran coach Steve DePasquale switched starters Rylee Shappell, from shortstop to centerfield, and Alexa Lee from CF to shortstop for all four games -- and both responded well with outstanding performances.

Shappell, who played at Triton last season, proved dangerous at the plate as she smashed a key home run in Game 1 to lead an 8-7 win over Brookdale and came rigumph over right back in Game 2 to spark an 11-4 triumph.

Both Shappell and Lee, who played at Gloucester City last spring, were outstanding defensively in all four games, which included a split at Middlesex, winning in Game 1, 10-5, and falling in Game 2 by a 5-4 count. The windy afternoon at Middlesex Sunday proved challenging for both teams.

"Both these players have been unselfish and did very well with the switch both on the field and at the plate," said DePasquale. "The coaches heard they played these positions in high school, so we gave it a shot and it worked out well."

Next up for the 9-6 Runners will be a doubleheader at Camden County College on April 18th followed by a twinbill at No. 10 Northampton on Saturday.

"Our Region 19 schedule is tough this year, and now we know we can play well against the good teams," said Coach DePasquale. "We look forward to the games against Camden County and Northampton this week."
