Wrestling Notebook: Roadrunners Eye Solid Start to Second Half of Season

Roadrunner wrestling prepares to swing into the 2019 portion of its current season with a road trip Saturday, January 12, to Muhlenberg College for the Muhlenberg College Duals.

The Roadrunners will compete in two dual meets, squaring off against Lackawanna County College at 12 noon followed by a match against host Muhlenberg College, a D-III four-year program, at 2 pm.

Antonelli will keep a watchful eye on the continued progress of several wrestlers, in particular first-year grappler Brandon Johnson, who has moved into the 197-pound weight class, and second-year standout Dylan Skidmore, who is showing steady improvement at 157 pounds.

Others expected to contribute Saturday include first-year standouts Jared Carr (149), Dylan Fischer (165), and Tyler Baer (170) along with sophomore Anthony Pencook (141),

Antonelli's team closed out 2018 with a strong finish. In the Long Island Open at Nassau Community College on December 8th, Fischer rolled to a 4-0 record in capturing the 165-pound title. The West Deptford High graduate prevailed over Cortland St. University's Charlie Spada.

Skidmore, meanwhile, a former Glassboro High star, dropped his first match of the day but finished a respectable 4-1 overall in claiming a fifth place showing at 157.

Those efforts led the Roadrunners to a solid fifth place team showing in the 14-team tournament won by Baldwin-Wallace College, a perennial NCAA DIII power.

"These guys have shown a lot heart and they're beginning to finish their matches nicely," said Antonelli. "It's great to see their improvement over the course of the season."

And that improvement will hopefully be a key factor as RCGC hosts the Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) CHampionship Meet on January 26th.

"We hope to go into the GSACs healthy and wrestling well," said Antonelli. "We want everyone peaking as we enter the latter part of the season."
