GSAC Wrestling Championships: Roadrunners Win Second Straight Crown!

The Roadrunner wrestling team repeated as Garden State Athletic Conference champions when they rolled through a field of five teams at home Saturday to grab a second straight crown.

On the mats, Coach Dan Antonelli's squad handily defeated Camden County College, Bergen, Middlesex and Union for a 4-0 record on the day in winning the title. Leading the way were sophomores Dylan Fischer (165 pounds), Riley Onorato (174-184) and Tyler Baer (174-184), who all walked away with a combined five wins on the mat and 11 wins total, including forfeits.

With 10 sophomores on the roster, the confidence level was high entering the tournament," said Fischer.

"The difference is last year we had a lot of new kids, but it helped us have great team chemistry this year," said Fischer, a sophomore out of West Deptford. "We just knew what we had to do, and we executed well."

Experience was indeed the key, noted Onorato, a former Paulsboro High standout.

"Getting the experience last year and learning what college wrestling is all about really helped a lot," said 174-pounder Riley Onorato. "Our confidence was off the charts coming in here today."

And expectations moving forward toward the upcoming District and national championship tournaments are pretty loft as well, said Baer, a sophomore out of Pitman High.

"We're aiming to send 10 wrestlers out to nationals -- we had six last year and we feel we can reach that goal this year," said Baer, who won two matches

"And the freshmen group fit right into the culture and gave us a very balanced roster."
