GSAC Wrestling: Roadrunners Seek to Repeat as Team Champion

The Roadrunner wrestling team is set to defend their Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) Wrestling Championships Saturday, February 8, when they host the 2020 GSAC Championships, which will feature five teams.

Coach Dan Antonelli's squad enjoyed a solid 2019-20 regular season, highlighted by a 10-5 dual meet record and a fifth place showing in the National Duals in Louisville, KY last month. The Runners, coming off a recent heart-breaking loss to  NJCAA power Nassau County (NY), have competed well  against top NJCAA and NCAA Division III programs this winter.

And Antonelli and his wrestlers feel they are ready for the postseason. That starts with the GSACs, which will also include, Bergen County, Middlesex, Camden County and Union County.  Wrestling begins at 10 am with the Roadrunners earning a bye in the opening round.

"We have a few things to clean up, and we'll work hard in practice this week to start making these adjustments," said Antonelli. "But overall, we expect to perform well moving forward -- this team will accept nothing less."

Spot on, said talented 165-pound start Dylan Fischer, a former West Deptford star who sports a 15-2 overall record and who is looking to make a deep run during the postseason.

"Coach Antonelli has been great in helping us to make adjustments," said Fischer. "The matches are only going to get tougher in the GSACs, Districts and National Championships."

Freshman Curtis Thomas, who has enjoyed a solid season at 197 pounds, looks forward to contributing to the team's 2020 success.

"We've worked amazingly hard this season to get where we are -- we're excited at the chance to repeat as GSAC champions," said Thomas, a former Delsea standout. "We're looking forward to a great week of practice and a great tournament."
