Gill, Hawkins-Davenport Lead Underdog Dukes Past No. 11 Roadrunner Men's Basketball

It proved to be a frustrating night where the Roadrunner Men's Basketball team had no answers either on offense or defense.

Thanks to the hot shooting and aggressive defense from RCSJ Cumberland's Colin Gill and Ja'Maine Hawkins-Davenport, each of whom pumped in 20 points apiece, the Dukes coasted to a 73-59 victory over the No. 11 nationally ranked Roadrunners Thursday night. The loss snapped a four-game win streak and dropped Coach Rich Casey's team record to 13-3 overall.

The underdog Dukes (3-14) did not fit that role but instead played a spoiler role with their crisp shooting and solid "D". Gill and Hawkins-Davenport proved lights out on their three-point shots with each player draining 3 of their 4 attempts. Gill also ended the game hitting 8 of 14 field goal attempts with his counterpart Hawkins-Davenport connecting on 7 of 10 attempts.

With about 8 minutes remaining in the first half, the Dukes went on a 10-0 run, finishing the first half with a commanding 39-22 lead. They took that momentum and built a 27-point second half advantage before the Runners rallied but fell short.

Guards Quantavious Rogers (18 points) and forward Eriq Campbell (11) provided some late scoring punch for the home team, but it was too late.

"We were outplayed, outcoached and outhustled, and you have to give Cumberland a lot of credit," said Runners' coach Casey. "We shouldn't be surprised because Cumberland has a lot of very close losses against some good teams.

"I hope this made enough of an impression on all of us to make the changes we need to stay competitive. We're in a very tough Region as we see all the time."

Next up for the Runners will be a key GSAC and Region 19 game vs. Union at 12 noon Saturday.

"Union is another tough team with some good shooters that they set up well," said Casey. "We will need to be ready to play a whole game at the highest level."
