Roadrunner Softball Team Drops Pair of Close Decisions in Season Opener vs. Del Tech

The final outcomes were not what head coach Steve DePasquale was looking for, but there were nonetheless plenty of solid takeaways -- and areas for improvement -- that the Roadrunners' softball team took away from a doubleheader loss Sunday to Delaware Technical Community College on the road.

The Runners, who have 13 freshmen on their roster, opened their 2020 season with close 4-2 and 4-3 losses to Del Tech -- outcomes DePasquale knows can easily change with a little more experience.

DePasquale's team enjoyed some solid pitching and ran the bases well, but the Runners were unable to generate enough offense to overcome their D-II opponent.

"We struck out a total of 23 times in the doubleheader, so we have some work to do at the plate," noted DePasquale, who is in his 26th year of coaching. "So we'll go back to the drawing board and keep working. This team will find their groove."

In Game 1, Kylie Abriola and Grace Fox each stroked hits and scored runs, but it wasn't enough in a 4-2 loss. Mackenzie Ponto (West Deptford) had a solid outing on the mound, surrendering two runs and two unearned runs, but was tagged with the loss.

In Game 2, Macenzie Long collected two hits and scored a run, but the Runners lost a tough 4-3 decision. Freshman pitcher Lacey Abrego took the loss.

The Runners will meet Del Tech once again in their home opener when they host a doubleheader on Sunday, March 8 in a 12 noon start.
