GAME DAY: Runners Stage Rally But Fall Shy vs. Mercer County -- See Photo Highlights

The Roadrunner softball team's lineup woke up offensively for the first time this season in Game 2 of a doubleheader vs. visiting Mercer County Community College on March 9 -- but a furious rally fell just shy of its mark.

Down by seven runs entering the bottom of the fifth inning, the Runners erupted for six runs but still lost by a heart-breaking 7-6 mark.

The loss allowed the Vikings to complete the doubleheader sweep as they defeated RCSJ 12-3 in the opener.

Freshmen Julianna Capasso and Paige Fox collected hits while sophomore Kelsee Murphy and freshman Lacey Abrego picked up RBI's during the Roadrunner rally. Mercer County. After the Vikings moved out to a commanding 7-0 lead in the fifth, Coach Steve DePasquale's team cut the margin to 7-3 before adding three more runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Murphy and sophomores Macenzie Long and Mackenzie Freas each managed multiple hits for the Roadrunners. Abrego hurled seven complete innings for the Runners, allowing seven runs on nine hits while striking out four.

In Game 1, the Runners fell behind 12-1 before adding two late runs in a 12-3 loss.

Next up fpr the Runners will be the team's annual spring break roadtrip to Titusville, FL. The next opponent will be Ridgewater College at Chain of Lakes Park in Titusville on Friday, March 13.
