Wrestling: Roadrunners Continue Success in Green Terror Duals

Wrestling: Roadrunners Continue Success in Green Terror Duals

RECAP

Roadrunner Wrestling knew they would face some tough competition this weekend in Westminster, MD but once again they more than held their own picking up two wins on the day at the Green Terror Duals hosted by McDaniel College. Freshmen Nick DiGiacomo (Timber Creek HS) and C.J. Mazzarelli (Delsea Regional HS) set the table all day long giving the team leads in all three matches going 3-0 on the day as did standout sophomores Dylan Fischer (West Deptford HS) and Tyler Baer (Pitman HS). Baer's :42 secong pin against McDaniel's Gabe Dennis was among several highligts for the Roadrunners.

The first match of the day was the most competitve for the Roadrunners as host McDaniel scored a late come from behind win with two pins in the final two bouts. DiGiacomo (dec.), Mazzarelli (major), Atlee Cullison (fall), Fischer (fall), and Baer (fall) had all won to give the Roadrunners the lead. Fischer and Baer have come into this season with confidence from success last season and have been the leaders setting the tone in the practice room and on match day.

The Roadrunners took control of the rest of the day as they scored early and often in a 39-9 win over Gettysburg and then capped their day with a 24-18 win over Alvernia. Sophomore John Fountain (Deptford HS) scored a big win by fall to close out the win over Gettysburg that excited the crowd and his teammates and helped carry momentum over to the match against Alvernia. Sophomore Riley Onorato (Paulsboro HS) was among the winners in the match against Alvernia and looks strong again this season.

The 2-1 day over very strong NCAA Division III competition bodes well for the Roadrunners as they are preparing for thier first-ever trip to the NWCA National Duals in January. Now 8-3 overall, the team has two major tournaments coming up in December as they will take part in the Bob Quade Tournament hosted by Centenary and then the annual Long Island Open.

South Jersey wrestling fans send their thanks to the staff at McDaniel for livestreaming all of the action on Saturday!
