Swietanski Leads Runners Past Union CC in Regular Season Finale

Following a brief, but up and down Spring 2021 season against a tough schedule, the Roadrunner women's soccer team can see some bright days ahead.

In the final regular season contest Tuesday, Coach Megan Ruttler's squad blanked a strong Union County team, 3-0, in a Garden State Athletiic Conference home match. Midfielder Leigh Swietanski scored two goals while teammate Gabrielle Cirucci added a goal, all in the first half, while the defensive backs and goalkeeper Allison Gebhart played well to post the win. Also adding assists were Ave Buonpastore, Miranda Uzdavines, and Victoria Hassett.

The win avenged a loss last month to the Owls and put the Runners over the .500 mark at 4-3 to conclude the Spring 2021 regular season.

"It was nice to turn the tide on Union since our first game," said Coach Ruttler. "We've had a great rivalry with them the past few years.

"Our effort also shows how much we've improved in the past few games. We were aggressive on offense from the start and our defense continued to play well."

Since the loss to Union, the Runners closed out the regular season with three straight wins. A scheduled season finale was set for later this week against Mercer County, but the game has been canceled.

The Region XIX playoffs will begin next week with seedings and matchups to be announced.
