Overtime Goal Helps Harcum College Edge Roadrunners Men's Soccer in Season Opener

For more than 90 minutes of play Thursday afternoon, the RCGC men's soccer team hung tough against Division 1 opponent Harcum College in the season opener for the Roadrunners.

But it all fell apart quickly at the start of overtime with the two teams engaged in a hard-fought 1-1 tie.

Sophomore forward Karam Idris secured the win by ripping in a shot from the left side with 9:09 remaining in overtime to seal the 2-1 outcome for the visiting Bears (2-0).

The loss overshadowed a brilliant effort by Roadrunners' goalkeeper Nikolas Anagnou (Middle Township), who recorded nearly a dozen eye-opening saves.

"We played well as a team -- we just fell short at the end," said Anagnou following his first RCGC start. "It's just one game -- we'll continue to get better."

Freshman midfielder Justin Phy (Triton) scored the Runners' lone goal, with an assist from Paolo D'Alessandro (Paul VI), in the first half to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Harcum knotted it at 1-1 on a Dan

Roth unassisted goal later in the half. The two teams battled hard through a scoreless second half to finish regulation at 1-1.

"It was frustrating -- we stayed with Harcum the entire game and had our chances," said RCGC coach George Hobbins. "Overall there are a lot of pluses to take away from this game, but we need to stay

focused and pick it up on offense."

The Roadrunners will host nationally ranked Howard CC on Saturday at 12 noon.
