Tuesday's hard-fought game between the Roadrunner men's soccer team and visiting Union County ended in a 1-1 tie -- but it felt much different than that to the RCSJ players following the marathon double-overtime battle.

Afterall, the Roadrunners outshot the Owls by a whopping 20-3 margin, including 7-1 in the first half and 9-2 in the second half, to dominate most of the offensive action that took place on the blazing hot afternoon.

"It felt like a loss," said back Chris Jackson (Williamstown), who may have summed up his teammates' feelings in a precise manner afterwards. "We felt we outplayed them, but we couldn't finish it. It ended in a tie, but that's not much consolation."

Francesco Fazzolari (Glassboro) drilled in a goal in the first half with an assist from Santino Mancini (Glassboro) as the Roadrunners took a 1-0 lead. But in the second half, Dominique Denilson tied it up at 1-1 early in the frame with an assist from Kellyn Amozoqueno.

It stayed that way through overtime periods as the teams resorted to a defensive struggle to close out the marathon battle. Freshman goalkeepers Connor Rink (Haddon Heoghts) and James Bartolotto (Gloucester Catholic) split duties in the nets once again.

"We played well in the first half, especially the first 20 minutes," said Coach George Hobbins. "We had plenty of early opportunities, but if you don't cash in when you have that chance, it usually comes back to bite you. We let Union stay in the game, and you can't let that happen against a good team."

It doesn't get any easier as the Runners visit Region XIX and GSAC rival Brookdale on Saturday at 12 noon at the Capelli Complex.

Roadrunner men's soccer look to continue their Region XIX playoff quest at home on Tuesday, September 17 as Union County College makes a visit to Deptford, NJ. The game is a key Region XIX and Garden State Athletic Conference match between two talented rivals.
