Bethea, Viillari Dominate Inside Game as Runners Eliminate Camden CC to Advance to Region 19 Championship

Sophomore forward Jermyra Bethea tossed in 18 points while teammates Miya Villari and Shannon Pierman scored 13 and 11 respectively, lifting the Roadrunner Women's Basketball past No. 2 seed Camden CC, 61-41, in a Region 19 North Atlantic District semifinal Thursday.

The triumph vaults the Runners into a Saturday afternoon showdown at top-seed Montgomery County College in the Region 19 championship game starting at 12 noon. The two teams split their two regular season games, with the Runners winning in late November and the Mustangs grabbing a victory at RCSJ in February.

"This will be a really tough game, but we'll be ready," said Villari, a freshman forward as she looked ahead to the title game. "Our games with Montgomery were both close, and we're expecting that again."

Against Camden CC, Villari saw plenty of court time, providing scoring and rebounding punch. She netted 11 of her 13 points in the second half as the Runners outscored the Cougars, 34-22, to seal the win.

Bethea scored 10 first half points to help RCSJ to a 27-19 halftime advantage. The Cougars led 10-5 after the first quarter, but Bethea and teammate Shannon Pierman took control of the boards to help the Runners into the halftime lead.

"We put some effort into our rebounding and defense," and it paid off," said Bethea. "We're all on the same page and really helping each other out."

Next up, the Runners will meet No. 1 Montgomery CC Saturday for the Region 19 title! Head Coach Rich Cooper hopes to see the same effort from his team that he witnessed in the semifinal win over Camden CC.

"No complaints about tonight's game (against Camden) -- and we will need the same effort against Montgomery," said Cooper, whose team hopes to repeat as Region 19 champions. "Both teams know each other well, and we know this will be a tight battle."
