Sewell, Hoffman Shine in Helping Roadrunner Men's Soccer Edge Middlesex College

With a 10-2 overall record and a roster of talented players, RCSJ Men's Soccer Coach George Hobbins is pretty clear on his assessment of his current team.

"This might be one of the best teams we've had in school history," he commented. "These players have been consistent and they've worked hard."

The Roadrunners survived another tough fight on Thursday by turning back upstart Middlesex College, 1-0, on an afternoon when the outcome could have been very different. Freshman forward Brandon Sewell scored the game's lone goal in the first half while sophomore goalkeeper Gunner Hoffman was again brilliant in earning his 9th shutout of the season.

Hoffman turned the momentum in his team's favor by halting a Colts' penalty kick with an acrobatic save in the first half. He continued his fine play into the second half to post the shutout and continue his record-breaking season.

On Tuesday, Hoffman broke the Roadrunner men's soccer record of consecutive scoreless minutes (396) in a season previously held by Mike Malloy in 1984. Following the win vs. the Colts, that scoreless stretch now stands at 486 minutes.

"Gunner (Hoffman) has been fabulous all season, and he again made the difference today," Hobbins commented.

The win was the sixth straight for the Runners, who will next travel to Sussex CCC on Saturday, Oct. 16th, in a conference showdown. Middlesex entered the game having won 4 of their last 5 matches, falling to 6-6-2 overall.
