Piontkowski Nets Two Goals, Torres Eguiluz Posts Shutout as Roadrunner Men's Soccer Blanks Bergen CC

Sophomore Robert Piontkowski and teammate Jacob Garrett provided the offense while Diego Torres Eguiluz was perfect in goal as the Roadrunner Men's Soccer grabbed a huge 3-0 win over Bergen on the road Saturday afternoon.

The win over perhaps the GSAC's top teams in Bergen was the third straight and sixth in their last seven matches for the surging Runners. Veteran Coach George Hobbins has seen the improvement, but acknowledges he hopes his team keeps working hard as the Region 19 playoffs approach in October.

Piontkowski scored two goals and Garrett added a key second half score to provide the offensive spark while goalkeeper Diego Torres Eguiluz turned back right shots to record the shutout at goalkeeper -- and it was the fifth of the season since Diego returned from an early season injury.

Piontkowski's first goal, assisted by Chalie Sheel, came at 38:27 of the first half for a 1-0 lead. Garrett increased the margin to 2-0 with his goal in the second half while Piontkowski sealed it in the closing moments with a goal assisted by Noah Heitz.

"Rob (Piontkowski) is one of several players giving us a boost offensively, and Diego (Torres Eguiluz) has been solid since his return from his injury," said Hobbins.

Hobbins' squad improved to 7-5-1 overall as his team appears poised to make another Region 19 playoff run in October.

Bergen, which has also been under consideration for an NJCAA Division III national ranking, fell to 5-2-2 overall with the loss.

Next up for Hobbins' team will be a road match at Delaware County Community College on Oct. 8 at 4 pm before returning home on Saturday, Oct. 12th for a key GSAC meeting vs. Brookdale.
