Roadrunner Women's Basketball Nets Second Straight Win in Convincing Fashion Over Lehigh Carbon

It's all coming together early in the season, but then again Roadrunner Women's Basketball Coach Rich Cooper is not the least bit surprised.

Sophomore forward Maxine Ampofo led five players in double figures to help the Runners roll past visiting Lehigh Carbon CC, 71-22, in Region 19 action Tuesday night.

Ampofo continued her fine season, netting 19 points and matching it with 19 rebounds to emerge as the dominant player in the paint. Also scoring in double figures were forward Tireya Wyatt with 11 points and guard Destiny Hines and forwards Deborah Beecher and Jermyra Bethea with 10 apiece.

The Runners improved to 2-2 overall, winning their second straight after opening the season with two losses to nationally ranked opponents. The Runners played opening games against Rhode Island and Onondaga in the Onondaga Tournament despite not playing any scrimmages prior to the tourney. Subseqiently, they were ousted in convincing fashion in both games.

"We're not sorry that we played those two games -- we needed to get to know each other," said Cooper. "The chemistry is coming together now. We knew it would. We're spreading out the ball more efficiently on offense and our defense has really picked up the tempo. This team will only keep improving as we move forward."

Cooper's team jumped out of the gate fast, racing to a 20-4 lead in the first quarter and 39-11 advantage by halftime. The Runners then outscored the Pioneers by a 32-11 margin in the second half.

Aside from Ampofo's solid play, guards Hines and Rosa also looked solid. Aside from her 10 points, Hines picked up 9 steals and set up several break-away points. Rosa scored 7 points, dished out 7 assists and registered 5 steals.

Next up for the Runners will be a home game vs. Ocean County College on Saturday, Dec. 2 in a qw noon tip-off.
