Lunsford Take Charge as RCGC Men's Basketball Tops Brookdale CC

Second-year guard Tyler Lunsford knew leadership mattered when his Roadrunner men's basketball team stepped onto the court against defending NJCAA Division III national champions Brookdale on Tuesday night.

With RCGC missing several key players from its lineup, Lunsford stepped up as only clutch players know how to do. The former Schalick High star led all scorers by pumping in 29 points and maintaining order on the court from his guard position as the Runners topped the visiting Jersey Blues 86-80 in Region XIX and GSAC action.

And Lunsford received plenty of support as the No. 10 ranked Runners had three other players score in double figures -- guard Alex Angeles had 17, forward Stretch Hawkins tossed in 15, and guard DJ Henderson added 10.

But despite his huge performance, Lunsford deflected all of the credit to his teammates.

"I knew it was important for me to step up tonight, but Coach (Will Wareham) emphasized that everyone was ready -- and they were said Lunsford. "Everyone contributed, and my teammates allowed me to open up my own game. We had a lot of confidence tonight."

The win was the second of the season for RCGC over Brookdale following a December triumph on the road. The victory pushed the Runners' overall record to 13-2 and 9-1 within the conference.

Coach Wareham's team broke a 40-40 halftime tie, jumping out to a 10-point lead at 72-62 before holding on for the win.

The Roadrunners will host Montgomery CC (PA) on Thursday evening starting at 7:30 p.m.
