Men's Basketball Slips by RCSJ Cumberland in Tight Battle at Rowan University

Men's Basketball Slips by RCSJ Cumberland in Tight Battle at Rowan University

With a large lead evaporated and just under six minutes remaining, lightning fast guard Alex Angeles returned to the lineup to reinvigorate the Roadrunner men's team in their heated battle vs. RCSJ-Cumberland at Rowan University's Esby Gymnasium.

And not a moment too soon.

With seven key points down the stretch and plenty of support from teammates Nick Sambour and Tim Schultice, Angeles and the Runners survived to stun the Dukes 94-89 before a large crowd. The win avenged an earlier defeat to Cumberland in November and enabled the Runners to capture their sixth win in their last seven outings. They now own an 8-13 overall record and 8-8 mark within the Garden State Athletic Conference,

Angeles, who left the game with 13:45 remaining with four personal fouls, led the way with 33 points.

With his foul trouble, Angeles sat the bench for about 7 minutes -- not surprisingly the Dukes erased a 16-point deficit and took a one-point lead with just under 6:00 minutes remaining.

"It was killing me to sit on the bench like that, especially when we had such control in this game," Angeles said. "When I came back in, I had to play smarter to avoid fouling out, but play aggressively too."

Angeles' presence enabled others to step up as well. Sambour drained 25 points and 2 steals while forward Schultice added 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

After nailing a huge 3 pointer with 3:06 remaining for asn 87-77 lead, Sambour drove the floor, drew a foul, and then sank two key free throws for a 91-85 advantage with 1:22 left. He noted that the loss to the Dukes in November weighed heavily on his mind.

"We just remembered that last game, how we lost, and that we should have won," said Sambour. "This felt great. We've really made a lot of progress in closing out these games."

Next up for the Runners is an away hame at Montgomery County College Thursday in a 7 pm game. Coach Will Logan's team will host Ocean County College on Saturday in a 2:00 pm tipoff.
